What’s Bizy Beez All About?

June 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It’s now summertime and time to reflect on the events of the past school year.  For the past thirteen years I have been teaching preschoolers and I have encountered many types of children. I’ve taught children who are outgoing, shy, reserved, outspoken, affectionate, and independent.  Additionally, I’ve taught children who require coaxing, quick learners, and children that struggle with learning.  This school presented the normal challenges as earlier years accept this school year I encounter a new challenge; a child who had been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Children that are between the ages of three and four years old naturally are abounding with high energy and are very active.  After working with a particular child this past school year I have learned to distinguish the difference between a busy child and a child diagnosed with ADHD.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) “is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood.  Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity)”. (p.1)

It is my wish that this blog becomes a forum for educators and parents to come together and discuss various strategies for teaching and managing children with ADHD.  Moreover, I wish to answer some important questions such as: Where does one begin to teach a child who has been diagnosed with ADHD? And, what are some of the challenges preschool age children face who have been diagnosed with ADHD?
